Biggs Furniture, History and Value

Biggs Furniture Company started in Richmond, Virginia. Of course, the company established a reputation for fine reproduction furniture in a few short years.

Today, Biggs Furniture Company no longer makes furniture. However, you can learn more about this beautiful reproduction company and their wonderful products in this video:

Of course, the reason Biggs is no longer in business is because another company acquired the name. In 1974, Kittinger Furniture purchased the Biggs company.

Essentially, Kittinger saw in the Biggs company the means to create a line of Virginia inspired reproduction furniture. The “Old Dominion” line appropriated some beautiful features of very Early American antiques.

So, today, many people make the association by saying “Biggs-Kittinger” when describing such pieces.

These Old Dominion pieces have a Federal or Colonial look, so they work very well in historic homes.

Virginia Furniture

As far as Virginia Furniture companies, Biggs remains one of the top. Indeed, this fine furniture company really represents the Virginia Furniture market in so many ways.

After all, in the mid 20th century, reproduction Federal furniture was the rage. Many companies, like Pennsylvania House Furniture Company, Harden Furniture, and Henredon Furniture continued to make traditional furniture in the 1940s through the 1990s.

So, Biggs was not alone in creating these fine reproductions. However, Biggs used very premium wood to craft their furniture. Indeed, nearly all of the Biggs pieces we have sold featured high quality Honduran mahogany.

Thus, many of the Biggs desks, Biggs dressers and Biggs dining room sets still command a pretty good dollar on the used furniture market. Indeed, whether you want Virginia furniture or not, these items show incredible quality and craftsmanship.

Biggs Furniture Value

Let’s take a look at some of these Biggs Furniture items we have sold over the years.

A Biggs Furniture Chest sold for around $900 in 2018. Of course, this chest featured dovetail drawers, brass hardware and nice tall Bracket feet. Also, it showed very good vintage condition. It had its original finish and very few signs of age and use.

Likewise, a Biggs Furniture Bed sold for just under $1000 in 2018. This lovely poster bed had a nice Federal style headboard and tall posts. Obviously, an important feature for Biggs Furniture beds is the fact that the rails bolt through the headboard and footboard. So, you can be sure the quality Biggs bed will not get loose or falter over the years. However, we should note that we refinished this vintage bed in order to bring it back to life.

Similarly, a Biggs dining table had several beautiful features. It had a full apron around the edges and on the two leaves. Also, it had a very traditional look with Colonial style tapered legs. Of course, the solid mahogany top made a very desirable table. The Biggs Table sold for $1200 in 2019.

Finally, a Biggs Furniture desk sold in 2017 for around $800. This beautiful Hepplewhite Style desk featured lovely oval hardware and beautiful tall legs. Again, we refinished this desk to bring it back to life.
